Trail preparedness
Hikers are urged to be prepared for constant weather changes including heavy hail, thunder and stormy conditions. Users should also know their limits when hiking through strenuous trail conditions with recent incidents of hikers being airlifted from the South Sister Climbers Trail. Bring an adequate water supply and your essential survival items.
Trail Work update
The trail reconstruction project will continue on the South Sister Climbers Trail at approximately 8,000 feet.
Stay on designated trails and do not cut switchbacks. North Fork Trail bridge above Tumalo Falls is receiving preventive maintenance. The handrail may be removed but the trail will be accessible with possible delays. A small dam removal project at the Suttle Lake Trail will start next week. Heavy machinery will be used with trail detours in place.
Leash Regulations
Leash requirements for users with dogs will end Sept. 15 for high-use areas including South Sister Climbers Trail, Moraine Lake, Todd Lake and the Deschutes River corridor trails. After the leash requirement ends, users are asked to pack a leash for dogs that may be disruptive to stock or other users.
Trail restrictions update
Public use restrictions have been lifted on the Deschutes and Ochoco national forest trails and general forest areas. Users are recommended to check campfire regulations at www.fs.usda.gov/centraloregon. Chainsaw restrictions have also been partially lifted with use permitted until 1 p.m.
