The body found northeast of Chemult has been identified as Bend resident Jonathan Sullivan-Shipley.

According to Klamath County District Attorney Rob Patridge, the 42-year-old’s death has been ruled a suicide by self-immolation.

“The body was disfigured by fire,” Patridge said.

Sullivan-Shipley was reported missing by his family on Sept. 6. He had last been seen on Sept. 5 when he left his home in Northeast Bend for work at an assisted living facility in Bend. He had not been in contact with family or friends after that day. On Sept. 13, Bend Police sent out a missing person flier asking for the public’s help in finding Sullivan-Shipley.

On Sunday, a hunter discovered the body inside Sullivan-Shipley’s 1989 Toyota Corolla Wagon, on a remote forest service road northeast of Chemult, Patridge said. The Klamath County Major Crime Team was activated to investigate the death.

Patridge said it was not clear how long Sullivan-Shipley’s body had been at the scene, but said the vehicle had been disabled, likely by a flat tire.

“He lit his car on fire, it appears,” Patridge said.

With the autopsy complete, Patridge said a death investigation will continue, but homicide has been ruled out.
