Firefighters on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District plan to ignite a pair of prescribed fires, one on Friday and another next week. The fires will likely put up smoke plumes visible from Bend.

Depending on recent rainfall, the firefighters will either burn 1,200 acres south of China Hat Road near Boyd Cave or up to 428 acres on Wickiup Butte 18 miles west of La Pine near the Wickiup Reservoir Dam, according to the Deschutes National Forest.

Next week firefighters plan to burn about 80 acres within the Lava Cast Forest, about seven miles east of Sunriver.
