Dec. 20,1935 – Oct. 1, 2013
John Jack Calvin Uhden passed away at home in Redmond October 1, 2013. He was born in Hendricks, Minnesota December 20, 1935 to John and Frances (Martens) Uhden. He lived on the family farm until the family moved to Corvallis, Oregon in 1950. Upon graduation from Corvallis High School in 1954, he traveled to Seward, Alaska where he worked as a longshoreman for the summer. After returning to the states (Alaska was not one then), he enlisted in the U.S. Army, received MP training and, much to his delight, was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.
In 1959, Jack married Janet Weaver. They lived in Corvallis, where he began a twenty-five year career with the Corvallis Police Department as patrol- man and detective. During the early 1970s, Jack was working full-time, attending college to earn an Associate degree in Law Enforcement, in addition to building a home west of Corvallis for their family of five. He was a member of the Oakville Presbyterian Church, where he met many lifelong friends.
Jack retired in 1988, after which he and Jan enjoyed many travel trips through 48 of the 50 states, as well as several other countries. The 1993 move to Redmond, Oregon presented a major change of climate, and the opportunity to meet many new friends.
An otherwise healthy guy, it was in May, 2013, when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Jacks ideal lifestyle was of a simple, live-off-the- land existence, yet he also enjoyed helping others. Volunteer work included Habitat for Humanity; clean-up and rebuilding in New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina; Meals on Wheels; Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; projects and committees at Community Presbyterian Church; the Redmond American Legion Post 44; and wherever else he saw a need. Hobbies and interests were family gatherings, hunting, fishing, reading, gardening, music and attending bluegrass festivals. His desire to help others, his quick sense of humor and his appreciation for life will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Jan of Redmond; children, Sheryl (Steve) Gray of La Pine, John (Zelda) Uhden of Lebanon, and Vonda (Rob) Brillon of Albany; grandchildren, Collin Aschoff, Daniel Aschoff, Kory Aschoff, Cassandra Allen, Shalyn Uhden, Shelby Uhden and Chad Brillon; and one great-granddaughter, Avery Brillon. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Rose) Uhden of Donnelly, Minnesota; sister, Eunice Allan of Lake Stevens, Washington, and brother, George (Darlene) Uhden of Maupin, Oregon; brother-in-law Prince Schaeffer of Marysville, Washington; and sister-in- law, Sue Uhden of Everett, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marian Schaeffer; and brother, David Uhden.
A celebration of Jacks life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11 at Community Presbyterian Church, 529 NW 19th Street, Redmond, Oregon.
Memorial gifts may be sent to Partners in Care Hospice, 2075 NE Wyatt Ct., Bend, OR 97701; or Community Presbyterian Church, 529 NW 19th St., Redmond, OR 97756. The family is forever grateful to both, for their care and support.
