Cougars cruise to win

PORTLAND — An hour before the final Class 5A volleyball rankings froze on Saturday night, Mountain View dropped from No. 16 to 17 on the list. That one place was the difference between hosting a play-in match and going on the road.
The demotion apparently lit a fire beneath the Cougars, who went into Jefferson High on Tuesday night and swept the Democrats 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 for the survive-and-advance play-in win.
“It was definitely one of our better matches,” Mountain View coach Jill McKae said. “We were able to pull together as a team and just focus on running some offensive plays. We had opportunities to run offensive plays, and we haven’t really been able to do that all season.”
Jill Roshak recorded 12 kills to pace the Cougars, who advance to the first round of the state playoffs for a Saturday contest against a to-be-determined opponent. Also for Mountain View, Mikayla Schumacher was credited with 14 assists, Karlee Duncan had three blocks, and Taeya Boling finished with three aces.
Katy Mahr filled in at libero for an injured Hayley Intlekofer, and McKae said the junior paced the defense in Mountain View’s victory over Jefferson, the 16th seed and Portland Interscholastic League member.
“What was different (in this matchup compared with those in the regular season) was limiting the other team’s runs on points,” McKae said. “They did a really good job of getting the side-out quickly and getting runs of our own.”
In other Tuesday action:
VOLLEYBALL
Sisters 3, Summit 1: After four close sets, the Class 4A Outlaws took home a nonconference road win over 5A Summit 25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 26-24. Sisters’ Isabel Tara racked up 19 kills and four blocks, Allie Spear tallied 16 kills, 21 digs and eight aces, and Nila Lukens had 10 kills. Alex Hartford helped out with 28 assists and four aces for Sisters, Savannah Spear totaled 21 digs, and Katleyn Meeter had 18 assists and four aces. “I thought we played really upbeat in the first two games,” Sisters coach Miki McFadden said. “We came out on fire, but lost a little focus. Then we brought it back which was really nice.”
Madras 3, Corbett 1: CORBETT — After dropping the first game, Madras took the next three and won the nonleague road match over Class 3A Corbett, 19-25, 25-17, 25-13, 29-27. Shelby Mauritson paced the offensive attack at the net for the 4A White Buffaloes, who were led in serve receive by Keely Brown and Alexis Urbach. Madras, champion of the Tri-Valley Conference, will host Philomath in a first-round state playoff match on either Friday or Saturday. The winner of that contest advances to the eight-team state championship tournament Nov. 8-9 at Lane Community College in Eugene.
GIRLS SOCCER
Sisters 1, Mountain View 1: In a must-win matchup, the Cougars used a 56th-minute goal by Rylee Dickinson to salvage a nonconference draw against the visiting and unbeaten Outlaws. Mountain View entered the contest ranked 24th in the OSAA Class 5A rankings, which is the final qualifying spot for the play-in round. The rankings were to be set late Tuesday night. “We really needed to get some momentum going into our play-in game,” Cougars coach Donnie Emerson said. “And they did.” After a cross from Haley Carlson led to an Emily Corrigan goal to give 4A Sisters (13-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute, Mountain View’s Nelly Ibarra connected with Dickinson to even the score. Sarah Bailey was credited with 13 saves in goal for the Cougars (4-9-1). Sisters, which wraps up regular-season play with a nonleague contest at Summit on Thursday, won the Sky-Em League to earn a first-round home match in the 4A state playoffs next Tuesday.
Molalla 4, Madras 0: MOLALLA — The visiting White Buffaloes closed out their season with a Tri-Valley Conference loss to the Indians. Madras finished the season with a record of 0-8-2 in TVC play and 0-9-5 overall.
BOYS SOCCER
Culver 7, Irrigon 1: IRRIGON — Mikey Alonzo posted four goals in the first half and added another after the break to lead the Bulldogs to a season-ending Class 2A Special District 4 win. Arturo Vasquez netted a goal for Culver (3-6 SD4, 7-6 overall), Isaias Gutierrez scored once, and Francisco Terrazas was credited with two assists. Bulldogs coach Tom Kirk commended the play of freshman Anthony Olivares, who in his first start at goalkeeper made at least 12 hands-on saves, according to Kirk.
Molalla 2, Madras 1: MADRAS — Molalla scored the go-ahead goal in the final moments in the Tri-Valley Conference match against the slumping White Buffaloes. Oved Felix broke a scoreless tie six minutes into the second half with a goal on a penalty kick. The visiting Indians got even with a goal 10 minutes later, and as Madras made a late push for the win, Molalla went ahead on a score with about two minutes remaining. The White Buffaloes, who dropped their fourth in a row after a seven-game unbeaten streak, finished fourth in the conference (4-4-2 TVC, 6-5-2 overall) and hope to land a Class 4A play-in game later this week for the chance to earn a berth in the 4A state playoffs.
