A new elementary school slated to be built in southeast Bend will have room for 600 students and is expected to open as early as fall 2015.

Community members will get a first look today and Wednesday at new designs for a middle school and elementary school slated to be built in Bend in the coming years.

Today, those interested in the new middle school design can swing by Miller Elementary School between 4:30 and 6 p.m.

The middle school is expected to house 800 students on 33 acres between Miller Elementary and Summit High schools. The school district has agreed to pay no more than $875,000 for the property.

On Wednesday, the new elementary school design will be on display from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Jewell Elementary School.

The 600-student elementary school is slated for a 12.5-acre parcel of land between Reed Market and Brosterhous roads east of Third Street in southeast Bend. The school district has agreed to pay $2.6 million for the property.

Steele Associates Architects is designing the elementary school, and BBT Architects is designing the middle school.

Architects and other members of the school design teams will be on hand at the open houses to show the public floor plans, renderings and initial site plans.

The new schools, expected to open as early as fall 2015, are the cornerstone of a $96 million bond approved by voters in May. The bond will also pay for 138 other improvements to schools.

In the past five years, the district has seen enrollment grow by more than 1,000 students.

The bulk of elementary schools built in the district over the past two decades have been based on a prototype design that features several wings with clusters of classrooms surrounding open spaces. In August, the school board approved a contract with Steele Associates that allows the design of a school based on the current prototype or a new design that builds upon the old standard.

Bend-La Pine Schools hasn’t built a middle school since Sky View Middle School opened in 2000.
