Eugene Callender, 87: A civil rights advocate best known for starting an innovative series of “street academies” for disadvantaged New York City youths that became a model for nontraditional educational programs nationwide. Died Saturday in Manhattan.
Chris Chase, 90: An actress, journalist, memoirist and co-author of autobiographical books about Rosalind Russell, Josephine Baker and Betty Ford. Died Oct. 31 in New York.
