COTTAGE GROVE — Ridgeview did its fair share of film study and preparation for Saturday afternoon’s semifinal matchup.

But as Ravens coach Andy Codding told his team after a 49-17 win over Philomath:

“It comes down to the Jimmies and Joes. And these Jimmies and Joes are better than those.”

With Boomer Fleming rushing for 199 yards and three touchdowns, Ridgeview, seeded No. 4 in the 16-team bracket, ran away with a 32-point victory over the top-seeded Warriors at Cottage Grove field to advance to the Class 4A football state championship.

“Words can’t even describe that type of win,” said Ravens quarterback Jacob Johnson, who completed 5 of 8 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns to lead Ridgeview (12-1) to its 11th straight win. “We came out as hard as we could and played the entire game like we practiced all week. And it really paid off.”

Ridgeview, in just its second year of existence, piled up 435 yards on Philomath. And after an opening-drive touchdown by Fleming, the Ravens never trailed, outscoring the Warriors 28-7 in the second quarter to grab a 35-10 halftime lead.

“That first half, it was awesome,” said Fleming, who had 163 yards and all three of his touchdowns before the intermission. “We executed everything we prepared for very well.”

“He was incredible,” Codding said of Fleming, who several times appeared to be stopped for a loss or no gain but continued to churn his legs for positive yards. “There were several plays where we thought he was down, and the referees just let him keep going. He broke tackle after tackle. He had a fantastic game, but so did all the guys who were blocking for him.”

After Fleming and Philomath’s Nathan Burkus exchanged short-yardage touchdown runs in the second quarter, Ridgeview reeled off 21 straight points, including a fumble recovery for a score by Makinah Dunn and a 38-yard touchdown catch by Reece Rollins. In the third quarter, Rollins added to his highlight reel, making a one-handed grab for a 45-yard score to give the Ravens a 42-17 lead.

“I knew I was getting held,” said Rollins. “I just put my hand up and the ball landed in. I brought it down and got in the end zone.”

Ridgeview’s defense, meanwhile, logged four sacks and eight tackles for a loss, keeping the wing-T offense of Philomath, the last remaining undefeated team in 4A heading into Saturday’s game, in check.

“Our defensive plan was the best I’ve ever seen from a high school staff,” Codding said. “We had a whole lot of film to watch, and we put it to use. Those guys did a great job of putting together a plan.”

Philomath quarterback Trey Ecker completed 14 of 23 passes for 189 yards and was intercepted once, and Austin Brown ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. But the Warriors (11-1) were stuffed time and again by the Raven defense, leading to a decisive — albeit unexpected, according to Codding and several players — semifinal victory.

“We didn’t really talk numbers,” Fleming said. “But we knew if we came out here and gave it everything we got, we knew we were the better team and we’d prevail.”

From the stands before the opening kick, fans could be heard: “This is your time, Ravens!”

For Codding, Ridgeview’s time comes next Saturday, at the 4A state championship against Cottage Grove, which defeated North Bend 37-34 in the other 4A semifinal Saturday. Game time and location for next Saturday’s championship game has yet to be announced.

“We won this game, but our time will be next week,” Codding said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do between now and next Saturday. We’re all really looking forward to the chance to play for a state title.”
