The first day of Thanksgiving break — Bend elementary and middle schools were off Friday because of the end of the trimester — my kids watched approximately 23 hours of the British television show “Robin Hood” on Netflix.

Not this week, though.

While the Thanksgiving break is a godsend for students and teachers, finding a way to burn off all that teenage or tween angst can be a nightmare for parents. Thankfully, Central Oregon has more than its fair share of indoor and outdoor winter activities to keep your kids off the Xbox and at least momentarily away from their phones.

Here are some ideas:

Nordic skiing: The Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center is scheduled to open this Friday. And as of last Friday, Dutchman Flat Sno-park had 10 inches of snow. Every ski shop in Bend rents nordic gear, with equipment for youth typically less than $10 a day. Visit www.mtbachelor.com.

Archery: Yep, this week is the perfect time to let your kids channel their inner Katniss Everdeen (the main character in “The Hunger Games” movies). Bend’s Competitive Edge Archery Indoor Range & Pro Shop on southeast Reed Market Road boasts 3-D animal targets that bring indoor archery to life. If you have your own bow and arrow, use of the indoor range is just $5 for as long as you want to shoot.

Equipment rental is $10 and that includes the $5 range fee. The shop does ask that first-time shooters take a short mini-lesson that costs $7. Visit www.competitivearcher.com.

Indoor climbing: The Bend Rock Gym was made for youngsters with spiderlike superpowers. Beginners can jump right into bouldering or use the gym’s auto-belaying system for higher challenges. The gym, located just off S.E. Reed Market near 15th Street, is open until 10 p.m. every weeknight. Cost is $10 for kids 15 and younger and $15 for those 16 and older. Shoes ($5), harness ($4) and belay device ($2) are also available to rent. Visit www.bendrockgym.com.

Bowling: Lava Lanes in Bend shuts down league play this week for open bowling. With bumper lanes available for the youngest bowlers, it is easy for the whole family to play a game or two. Other bowling alleys in Central Oregon are Bend’s Sun Mountain Fun Center, Prineville’s Rimrock Lanes, Madras Bowl & Pizza, and the Gilchrist Family Restaurant and its one lane. Visit www.lavalanesbend.com or www.sunmountainfun.com.

Swimming: The indoor pool at Bend’s Juniper Swim & Fitness Center offers diving boards, water basketball hoops and even a sweet rope swing. The pool is open from 1 to 4 p.m. this week for open swim. Cascade Swim Center in Redmond offers open swimming from noon to 2 p.m. this week. The Madras Aquatic Center has open swim hours from 6 to 8 p.m. today through Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday night and 1 to 4 p.m. on the weekend.
