Local riders off to slow start

LAS VEGAS — It was a slow opening night at the 2013 National Finals Rodeo for Central Oregon cowboys.

No local contestants finished in the money Thursday night during the first day of the NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Bareback riders Austin Foss, of Terrebonne; Bobby Mote, a former Culver resident; and Redmond’s Steven Peebles all posted scoring rides Thursday but were not among the top-six finishers who brought home checks. Foss recorded an 82-point ride, Mote scored an 80 and Peebles registered a 79 Thursday. Caleb Bennett won the first round of the NFR with an 85.5-point score on the horse Wise Guy, which was good for an $18,629.81 check. Kaycee Feild, Ty Breuer and Casey Colletti all tied for fourth with 83.5-point rides, the lowest mark to collect a paycheck. The trio each earned $5,208.33 for their first-round performance.

Central Oregon’s team ropers also struggled Thursday. Prineville roper Charly Crawford and partner Ryan Motes, of Weatherford, Texas, posted a time of 10.7 seconds — more than 5 seconds out of the money — and Brandon Beers, of Powell Butte, and his roping partner, Jim Ross Cooper, of Monument, N.M., failed to record a time.

Brothers Riley and Brady Minor, both of Ellensburg, Wash., won the first round of team roping with a time of 4.6 seconds.

The second round of the NFR kicks off tonight at 7 o’clock. The 10-day event runs through Sunday, Dec. 15, and is televised nightly on the Great American Country channel.
