Police: Student fires BB at staff

An Obsidian Middle School student was taken into custody by Redmond police Friday after he allegedly shot a member of the school’s staff with an Airsoft-style gun.

The student, identified as a 13-year-old male, reportedly shot a female staff member with a plastic pellet while hiding behind a shrub on the edge of campus at around 12:30 p.m. Another staff member apprehended the student. The staff member who was shot was not injured.

The school was placed on a brief lockdown during the incident.

The student is lodged at the Deschutes County juvenile detention facility and faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Cloverdale Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle collision around 11:40 a.m. Friday on Fryrear Road 1.3 miles north of U.S. Highway 20.

Michael Wilson, 53, of Bend, was delivering mail in a U.S. Postal Service Subaru wagon on Friday, facing northbound on the shoulder near two mailboxes. Tygh Redfield, 63, of Sisters, was driving a Toyota truck southbound when Wilson’s vehicle reportedly “lurched forward and to the left” into Redfield’s lane.

Redfield hit the right side of Wilson’s vehicle, and the two vehicles crashed through a fence west of Fryrear Road before Wilson’s car came to rest head-on against a nearby tree, according to reports. Redfield was treated and released at the scene, but Wilson had to be extricated from his Subaru by fire personnel and taken to St. Charles Bend by air ambulance.

Wilson was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The crash is still being investigated, and no citations have yet been issued.
