Culver grabs early lead at AI invite

REDMOND — With nine wrestlers advancing to the semifinals, Culver racked up 148.5 points to top the 16-team standings after the first day of the Adrian Irwin Memorial Tournament at Ridgeview High on Friday.

Among the nine semifinalists, Bolt Anglen and Tucker Davis — both individual Class 2A/1A state champions last year at 132 and 126 pounds, respectively — are on track to meet each other in the 138-pound bracket.

Mountain View, which has Zack Howe and Travis Martin on opposite sides of the 113 bracket, sits in second place with 141.5 points. Six semifinalists, including both Zach LaCasse and Brennan Yates at 195, have Redmond in third with 136 points.

Ridgeview is in fifth place with 110 points, paced by 170-pounder Chase Wolford, who logged three pins and spent no longer than 2 minutes in any match. Kasey Beuschlein highlighted Bend High’s four semifinalists, recording a 38-second fall in the second round of the 132-pound bracket before winning by major decision in the quarters. The Lava Bears trail the Ravens by 16.5 points.

La Pine and Summit are tied for 11th, each with two wrestlers in the semfinals. David Kerr (106) and Thorin Wilson (120) are still alive for the Hawks, while Grant Leiphart (126) and Jacob Thompson) represent the Storm.

Madras is 14th, with only Miguel Sevilla (285 pounds) vying for an individual title, followed by Sisters. Zachary Reid (106) and Clayton Darst (160) went as far as the quarterfinals for the Outlaws, but each lost by fall. The AI tournament continues today, with the finals scheduled for 2 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ridgeview 66, Redmond 33: REDMOND — The visiting Ravens jumped out to a 15-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and never let the Panthers back in the game. Hosanna Wilder scored a team-high 12 points for the Ravens and McKenzie Hidalgo added 11. Ten different players scored for Ridgeview, which is now 4-1 on the season. Freshman Emily Joyce led Redmond (0-3) with 12 points. Monica Reed added 10 for the Panthers, who trailed 34-11 at halftime.

La Pine 63, Estacada 40: SEASIDE — A lot of things went right for the Hawks early on, according to La Pine coach Kim Beer. In their Seaside Holiday Classic matchup against Estacada, the Hawks built an 18-point lead after the first quarter and outscored the Rangers 29-14 in the second half to seal the tourney win. Holli Glenn paced La Pine (4-4) with 23 points, while Katie Mickel and McKenna Boen added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Hawks continue tournament play today against Newport at noon.

Madras 51, Sisters 26: SEASIDE — Mariah Stacona was limited to just three points in the first half, according to Sisters coach Julianne Horner, but the White Buffaloes’ junior guard posted 12 points after the break to lead Madras (4-2) to the win at the Seaside Holiday Classic. Stacona finished with a game-high 15 points, as the Buffs outscored Sisters (1-4) 28-7 in the second half. Leah Suppah had 11 points for the winners, and Cirelle Frank chipped in eight. For Sisters, Savannah Spear led the way with nine points, and Jacobie Petterson finished with eight. The Outlaws take on Elma (Wash.) today at 3:30 p.m. during the final day of the Seaside tournament.

Culver 46, La Pine JV 17: CULVER — The host Bulldogs played their way into the final of the Culver Tournament with a convincing win over the La Pine junior varsity. Alysha Fritz scored a game-high 13 points to lead Culver, which also got eight points apiece from Emma Hoke and Raeanne Slaght. Julie Deniz led the Hawks with seven points. The Bulldogs (2-5) meet Lost River today at 2 p.m. for the tourney championship.

Gilchrist 33, Mitchell/Spray 25: GILCHRIST — Cassandra Blum and Sierra Shuey combined to score 27 points and helped the Grizzlies pull away in the second half for a Class 1A nonleague victory. Blum, who had six steals, scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter, when Gilchrist turned a 9-8 halftime lead into a 22-17 advantage. Shuey, who had 10 rebounds to go with her 13 points, scored five points in the fourth period as the Grizzlies improved to 3-8.

Crane 52, Trinity Lutheran 36: CRANE — Trinity Lutheran was in the game at halftime, trailing just 18-13. But the host Mustangs outscored the Saints 17-9 in the third quarter and advanced to the final of the Crane Christmas Tournament. Emily Eidler led Trinity Lutheran with 12 points, and Mariah Murphy and Rachel Spencer scored eight apiece. Murphy also had five rebounds and three assists for the Saints (2-3), who play McDermitt (Nev.) in the third-place game today starting at noon.

Chiloquin 42, North Lake 28: CHILOQUIN — Early foul trouble forced the Cowgirls’ Kendra Murphy and Karrah Davidson to sit out half the game, as North Lake’s three-game winning streak came to a close in the nonconference defeat. Murphy still managed to pull down 16 rebounds, while Taylor Stockton led the Cowgirls (4-2) with 11 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Churchill 57, Mountain View 49: EUGENE — Grant Lannin recorded 13 points and eight rebounds and Davis Holly hit three 3-pointers en route to 12 points, but the Cougars could not stop a late Lancer rally. Mountain View (2-2) led 30-19 at halftime but Churchill, which was the Class 5A state runner-up last season, outscored the Cougars 38-19 in the second half. “We ran out of gas a little bit in the second half,” Mountain View coach Craig Reid said. “They turned up the pressure a bit. And we just couldn’t keep them off the foul line.” The Lancers made 23 of 28 foul shots in the nonleague contest while the Cougars were just 5 of 8. Andrew Smith scored a game-high 21 points for Churchill.

Central Linn 55, Madras 54 (OT): SEASIDE — Playing in their second overtime game in as many days, the Class 4A White Buffaloes fell to the 2A Cobras in the semifinal round of the three-day Seaside Holiday Classic. Devon Wolfe recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds — both team highs — Brent Sullivan added 10 points and nine boards, and Jared Pichette ended the game with nine points and eight assists. Madras (3-3) led 27-18 at halftime, but Central Linn went on a 19-11 run in the third quarter to get back in the game. Central Linn’s Alex Pettner led all players with 25 points. The Buffs play in a consolation game today at 5:15 p.m.

Elma (Wash.) 58, La Pine 57 (OT): SEASIDE — There was no dramatic shot, no buzzer-beating game winner. This Seaside Holiday Classic matchup, according to Hawks coach Kent Wieber, was decided by free throws. Down the stretch in overtime, Elma went 3 of 4 from the line, while La Pine converted just 1 of its last 4 attempts, earning Elma the one-point victory. Adam Ramirez paced the Hawks (5-3) with 17 points and eight rebounds, Zack Smith had 12 points, and Samuel Wieber and Taylor Brown each posted nine points. La Pine wraps up the Seaside tournament today with a 5:15 p.m. contest against Madras.

Seaside 52, Sisters 42: SEASIDE — The Outlaws fell to 0-5 on the season after dropping their consolation game in the Seaside Holiday Classic. Sisters led 22-20 at halftime, but the Seagulls outscored the Outlaws 15-4 in the third quarter. “We went absolutely cold in the third,” Sisters coach Rand Runco said. “And we committed 10 turnovers that quarter.” Hayden Martinez led the Outlaws with 10 points. Sisters finishes up tournament play today against Astoria at 10:30 a.m.

Gilchrist 62, Mitchell/Spray 45: GILCHRIST — The Grizzlies improved to 4-0 on the season with the 17-point nonconference win. It was Gilchrist’s third straight victory.

Culver advances via forfeit: CULVER — A forfeit win over the Ridgeview junior varsity put the host Bulldogs in today’s final of the Culver Tournament. Culver will face South Wasco County at 3:30 p.m. The Ridgeview JV, which did not make the trip to Culver on Friday, is scheduled to play Lost River in the tournament’s third-place game starting at 12:30 p.m.

Chiloquin 57, North Lake 49: CHILOQUIN — Ethan Murphy scored 16 points and Matt Hinkel added 11 for the Cowboys in the nonleague defeat. North Lake is now 1-4 on the season.
