Deaths of note from around the world:

Alex Shear, 73: He left behind a collection widely described as one of the largest assemblages — quite possibly the largest — of pop-culture artifacts in private hands, with holdings so vast they once spanned 11 storage facilities in three states. Died Jan. 11 in New York.

Millard Midonick, 99: A former Manhattan Family Court judge and surrogate who decided numerous estate cases, including those of poet W.H. Auden and painter Mark Rothko. Died Jan. 18 in New York.

Chet Curtis, 74: Half of a Boston husband-and-wife news anchor team whose breakup caused wide distress in the city. Died Wednesday in Boston.
