Cowgirls sweep Buffs

Crook County opened the softball season with 16-4 and 15-3 wins over Madras in a Class 4A nonconference doubleheader Saturday.
The Cowgirls (2-0 overall) produced 19 hits in the first game. Emily Benton led the Cowgirls with a 5-for-5 performance at the plate that included two doubles and Jena Ovens, Kelsee Martin, Aspen Christiansen and Bailey Woods all went 3 for 5.
Madras (3-2) was led by Jasmine Reese, who went 2 for 3 with a double.
In the second contest, Martin and Ovens both recorded three hits. Cowgirl pitcher Hailey Smith picked up the win.
For the White Buffaloes, Elysia Moran went 3 for 4.

BASEBALL
Cowboys win one of two at home: PRINEVILLE — Crook County salvaged a home split against Madras, falling to the White Buffaloes 10-8 in the first game before earning a 16-6 run-rule victory later in the day. In the opener, Ethan Short recorded two hits and two RBIs to lead Madras (1-3 overall). Josh Ross picked up the win, striking out five over six innings. The Cowboys (1-1) mashed the ball in the second game, posting 16 hits in five innings before the 10-run mercy rule ended the contest. Spencer Copeland paced the Crook County offense by going 4 for 6 with three RBIs. Jared Wheeler, Trevor Slawter and Dylan Blasius all had two RBIs. Slawter also earned the win, striking out six in five innings.
Ravens advance to championships: KEIZER — Ridgeview kicked off the Volcanoes Spring Tournament by beating Woodburn 10-0 in five innings. Pitcher Jeffery Turbitt led the Ravens (3-0 overall) by striking out five while allowing just one hit. Mitchell Springer was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Dakota Schaumburg was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and one double against the Bulldogs. The Ravens then topped Estacada 8-7 in the tournament’s semifinal round. Schaumburg earned the win, fanning five over three innings. Collin Runge led Ridgeview at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. The Ravens play in today’s championship game against Gladstone.
SOFTBALL
Panthers rebound and defeat Crescent Valley: REDMOND — Redmond High split a pair of games with Willamette Valley schools, falling 22-0 to West Salem before edging out Crescent Valley of Corvallis 8-6. After their run-rule loss to West Salem, the Panthers used a big second inning against Crescent Valley, scoring all eight of their runs in their second at-bat. Kiahna Brown led the Panthers by going 3 for 4 with two triples. Hailey Burress added a pair of doubles. Jemeve Sencko earned the win by striking out seven while allowing just two hits.
Bears split with Eagle Indians: THE DALLES — Bend High lost 10-8 in the opening game of the Bears’ doubleheader with The Dalles Wahtonka before exploding for 21 hits in the late game to take a 13-7 victory over the Eagle Indians. In the first game, the Lava Bears (1-1 overall) led 7-2 after five innings, but five Bend errors in the sixth helped spark a late TDW rally. Megan Berrigan led the Bears at the plate going 4 for 4 with a double. Awbrie Elle Kinkade added three hits in the loss. Bend pulled off a comeback of its own in the second game after the Eagle Indians led 4-1 after the first inning. The Bears scored four runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to secure the road victory. Alexis Hill-Gruenberg earned the win, striking out one batter over five innings of work. Berrigan and Kendall Kramer each went 4 for 5 in the late game and Lisa Sylvester and Mariah Buckner added three hits apiece.
BOYS LACROSSE
Summit 12, Liberty 7: Griffin Reinecke and Dylan Smith recorded three goals apiece to lead the Storm in the nonconference victory. Troy Lalonde and Charlie Sturmer both had two scores for Summit, which improved to 3-2 on the season. The Storm, who are off until after spring break, also defeated Hillsboro’s Glencoe High 12-10 on Friday night.
Centennial 9, Bend 8: BOISE — Cohl Johnston and James Rockett paced the Lava Bears finishing with three goals and one assist apiece. Eli Pite had one goal and one assist, but it was not enough for Bend, which trailed 4-3 at halftime.
