Crook County powers past La Pine at baseball tourney

MADRAS — Crook County jumped to a six-run lead after the first two innings en route to picking up a 9-4 win over La Pine on Thursday at the White Buffalo Spring Classic baseball tournament.

Jared Wheeler earned the win for Crook County (2-2), while Trevor Slawter led the way offensively with a double and three RBIs. Jared McGuire drove in a run, Chase McCall tripled, and Dylan Blasius had a double.

La Pine (1-5) continues tourney play today against Yamhill-Carlton at 9 a.m., while the Cowboys take on Ridgeview at 11:30 a.m.

BASEBALL

McMinnville 7, Summit 6: KEIZER — The Storm struggled to find a rhythm the first five innings at the Volcanoes Spring Tournament, leading to a 7-1 deficit to the Class 6A Grizzlies heading into the sixth. Summit posted five runs in the sixth, but the rally was not enough to overtake McMinnville as the Storm suffered their first loss to fall to 3-1 overall. “We showed our youth today,” Summit coach Alan Embree said. “We just didn’t take care of the ball.”

Sierra Canyon (Calif.) 6, Sisters 5: SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Outlaws held a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Sierra Canyon posted four runs in the final frame, including a walk-off hit with the bases loaded, to grab the Salt River Classic victory. Cody Kreminski tripled for Sisters, Justin Harrer recorded a double, and Joey Morgan drove in a run. The Outlaws (1-1) continue tourney play today with a 10 a.m. game against Valley Union (Ariz.) and a 4 p.m. contest against Phoenix Christian (Ariz.).

Harrisburg 20, Madras 10: MADRAS — The White Buffaloes fell to 2-3 on the season after allowing the team’s most runs since 2011. Alec McDonald had a three-run double in the bottom of the fourth to pace Madras, which led 9-3 heading into the fifth inning before Harrisburg posted 10 runs to take control. The Buffs continue play at the White Buffalo Spring Classic against Pleasant Hill today at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Clatskanie 15, Culver 3: HEPPNER — The Bulldogs only allowed six hits, but they gave up 15 runs in a five-inning loss at the Heppner Tournament. Culver’s Gabby Moore was 1 for 1 with a run scored. Two of the Bulldogs’ runs came in the second inning, while the third and final run was posted in the third. Culver, which dropped to 0-9 on the season, was scheduled to play a second game against Heppner/Ione, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather.
