A few years ago, Bend would get a visit from a member of California indie hip-hop collective Living Legends a few times each year. At the old Madhappy Lounge, especially, and at other venues, shows by Luckyiam, Scarub, The Grouch and Eligh were regular occurrences.
It’s been a while, though, since a Living Legend rolled through town. That’ll change tonight when Sunspot Jonz headlines a night of underground rap and dance music at The Astro Lounge.
Ol’ Sunspot’s still grinding, if you were wondering. He released an album called “Skywalkers” last year that features plenty of his sturdy rhymes and left-of-center beats, and as of February, he was already hinting on Facebook at a new record “coming soon.” Gotta keep your name and music in front of people these days, you know? Even when you’re a Living Legend and, you could argue, at least in terms of the West Coast underground, a lowercase “L” living legend.
Anyway, opening for Sunspot tonight will be longtime Living Legend beatmaker (and Oregon native) Kruse, local rock-rap hybrid The HardChords and, tossing out tunes throughout the night, DJ Raider Mystic.
Sunspot Jonz, with Kruse, The HardChords and DJ Raider Mystic; 9 tonight; $5; The Astro Lounge, 939 N.W. Bond St., Bend; www.astroloungebend.com.
