The Deschutes Public Library system, along with libraries across the country, will give away free books on Wednesday as part of the World Book Night U.S. The goal is to give away half a million books in more than 6,000 locations.
Volunteers give away free copies of books they love in schools, food pantries and nursing homes, with the goal of encouraging reluctant or nonreaders to pick up a book.
Local volunteers will give away 30 different titles, including best sellers and classics, which were selected by local booksellers and librarians.
Those interested in participating next year can learn more at www.us.worldbooknight.org.
