Eight Dollar Mountain sprouts in Bend

Published 12:11 am Friday, April 25, 2014

This brief is about Eight Dollar Mountain, a quintet out of Ashland that makes some of the finest neo-traditional bluegrass in the great state of Oregon.

But it is also about the 4 Peaks Music Festival, to be held in June 20-22 near Tumalo.

Back to the band, though. Eight Dollar Mountain has been together since 2010, formed out of a jam session “in the hills outside of Ashland,” per the band’s bio. Together, guitarist Darren Campbell, banjoist Stuart Green, mandolinist Phil Johnson, bassist Peter Koelsch and Mark Lackey, who plays the resonator guitar — that’s the loud one you see sometimes with the metal on the front of the body — create a toe-tapping brand of bluegrass that’s both a nod to the buttoned-down aesthetic and rapid-fire picking of the genre’s early days and the more inclusive, loosey-goosey feel of the present. In other words: These guys have bluegrass chops, but they inject a fair amount of fun into their sound, too.

So how does 4 Peaks play into this? Well, Eight Dollar Mountain is playing 4 Peaks ‘14, for one. In fact, tonight’s show is a 4 Peaks pre-party, and there’ll be tickets to the festival available for purchase at the early-bird price of $120. (That price rises to $135 on Thursday, by the way, so act now, as they say in the infomercials.)

Also, 4 Peaks has been adding acts to what I think is the best lineup in the event’s seven-year history: Railroad Earth, Dumpstaphunk, The Pimps of Joytime, Carolyn Wonderland, Poor Man’s Whiskey, Hot Buttered Rum, Brothers Comatose, Moonalice, Polecat, Tracorum, White Water Ramble, JED, The Congress, The Coffis Brothers, Broken Down Guitars and … Eight Dollar Mountain! We’ve come full circle.
