- Joe Kline / The Bulletin Summit's Matthew Maton leads in the 3000-meter run during the 2014 Special District 1 championships.
Summit went 1-2 in four of five event finals on Friday afternoon, allowing the Storm to build a 77-point lead in the girls standings of the Class 5A Special District 1 track and field championships at Summit High.
The top two finishers in each event earn bids to the 5A state championships at Hayward Field in Eugene next week.
For the first time in Summit history, two girls qualified for state in the shot put, as Myah Harter and Brianna Marderos finished first and second, respectively. Olivia Brooks outlasted teammate Piper McDonald in the 3,000-meter run, Danielle Taylor edged Summit’s Hannah Cochran in the high jump, and Miranda Brown won the long jump ahead of Storm freshman Emma Stevenson. In the long jump, three Summit girls cleared 17 feet — a first for the program.
Mountain View is in second in the girls standings with 25 points, Bend is third with 19 points, and Ashland rounds out the four-team standings with nine points.
In the boys competition, Matthew Maton’s victory in the 3,000 helped Summit rack up 49 points to top the six-team field after the first day. Cameron McCormick also punched a ticket to state by taking second in the long jump.
Mountain View, which trails second-place Ashland by seven points heading into the final day, was led by Keaton Fitton’s runner-up finish in the pole vault. Kyle Tinnell won the long jump for Redmond, which is fifth as a team with 11 points, while Bend High, which has 10 points, was highlighted by Joel Johnson’s victory in the pole vault.
The Special District 1 championships continue today at Summit High, beginning with field events at 10 a.m.
