Sisters baseball defeats Ridgeview with walk-off

SISTERS — Steve Hodges prepared his team for Saturday’s contest. He told his players that it would be a playoff baseball game of sorts, what with Sisters ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Ridgeview holding the No. 8 spot. Hodges told the Outlaws that every at-bat would count, that each turn at the plate would be important.

The Outlaws’ coach was right.

With the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ryan Funk belted the first pitch he saw to right field to bring in Justin Harrer and give Sisters a 9-8 nonconference win.

“It was everything we thought it would be,” Hodges said.

The Outlaws scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab an 8-6 advantage. But the Ravens responded with two runs in the seventh to even things up.

In the bottom of the seventh, walks to Harrer, Joey Morgan and Jardon Weems set the table for Funk, who came through with the walk-off single.

“He’s a guy that’s grown up a lot,” Hodges said of Funk, a Sisters freshman. “He wants to be in that position. When he came up in that spot, he had a good feeling about it, and I had a good feeling about it. And he came through.”

Funk drove in two runs for Sisters, which claimed its 16th straight win to improve to 22-2 on the season. Weems doubled twice for the Outlaws and had two RBIs, Cody Kreminski went 2 for 3, and Harrer had two hits and scored three runs.

For Ridgeview (19-6), Kahl Malott went 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs, George Mendazona had a double in a three-hit day while scoring three runs, and Sam Walker was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
