Editorial: Don’t miss your chance to vote

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Today’s the day. If your ballot hasn’t been delivered to the county clerk’s office or one of the other drop-off sites in Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties by 8 p.m., forget about it. You’ve missed your opportunity to have a say in how your government runs.

By Monday afternoon just over 27 percent of Deschutes County voters had returned ballots, according to the county clerk’s website. In Jefferson County 30.1 percent of ballots had been returned, while in Crook County that number stood at 28.9 percent.

If you’re one of those who haven’t voted yet, there’s still time. Ballots must be received, not simply postmarked. You can find the nearest drop-off site at the secretary of state’s website, sos.oregon.gov. Click on the “Voting” tab, then on the “My Ballot” box and follow the instructions from there.

Deschutes County voters, meanwhile, must remember there’s a quirk in the circuit court judge election. Stephen M. Kurzer has withdrawn from the race, leaving Randy Miller and Thomas “T.J.” Spear. If neither Miller nor Spear wins a majority, the court will be one judge short until the runoff in November.

Remember, too, to check both the front and back of your ballot. In some cases, there are contests listed on both sides.

Finally, don’t forget to sign the ballot envelope before you turn it in. It would be a shame to have your effort go for naught because you failed to sign the ballot properly.
