BASEBALL

Beavers drop finale to USC — A day after wrapping up its second consecutive Pac-12 Conference championship, Oregon State lost 3-1 to USC at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles in the regular-season finale for both teams. Sunday’s decision clinched the three-game series for the Trojans; the Beavers had won their previous seven Pac-12 series. Kyle Davis struck out 14 OSU batters in a complete-game effort for USC (16-14 Pac-12, 29-24 overall), allowing five hits and no earned runs. No Oregon State player had more than one hit. Andrew Moore was the losing pitcher for the Beavers (23-7, 42-12).

Oregon State, 5 SEC teams to host regionals — Oregon State, as well as five Southeastern Conference teams, is among the 16 hosts for regionals in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament. No other Pac-12 team will play host. SEC tournament champion LSU and regular-season champion Florida are hosts along with Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Other regional hosts are: Florida State, Miami, Virginia, Oklahoma State, TCU, Indiana, Rice, Louisville, Cal Poly and Louisiana-Lafayette. The 16 regional hosts announced Sunday night are guaranteed spots in the 64-team NCAA tournament. The rest of the field will be announced today. The four-team, double-elimination regionals start Friday. Regional winners advance to the best-of-three super regionals the following week. The remaining eight teams will play in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., beginning June 14.

Cubs sign Ramirez as Triple-A player-coach — Manny Ramirez is coming back to baseball — as a player-coach for the Chicago Cubs’ Triple-A team. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said in a statement Sunday that Ramirez “is not and will not” be on the Cubs’ major league roster, but that he will serve as a mentor to Chicago’s minor-league hitters in Des Moines, Iowa.

Hockey

Russia beats Finland to win ice hockey worlds — Star forwards Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin scored eight minutes apart to lead Russia to a 5-2 victory over Finland in the final of the ice hockey world championship on Sunday in Minsk, Belarus, for its second title in three years. With Russian President Vladimir Putin looking on, Ovechkin tied the game at 2-2 in the second period with a backhand and Malkin wristed a shot high into the roof of the net on a power play for the go-ahead goal. Danis Zaripov also scored a goal and added two assists. Viktor Tikhonov and Sergei Shirokov scored a goal each.

Donovan breaks MLS goal record with Nos. 135, 136 — Landon Donovan broke the Major League Soccer scoring record Sunday with his 135th and 136th regular-season goals in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union in Carson, Calif. Donovan surpassed the mark he shared with Jeff Cunningham in the 49th minute with his first goal in four games this season, then added another in the 81st. The 32-year-old Donovan gave the Galaxy a 2-0 lead in the 49th minute in his first game since being omitted from the U.S. World Cup team. Donovan is the U.S. scoring leader with 57 international goals.

Motor sports

Force races to 100th female NHRA win — Courtney Force raced to the 100th victory by a female driver in NHRA history Sunday in the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. In her second attempt to earn the landmark victory in two weeks, the 25-year-old Force outran Cruz Pedregon in the final round for her first Funny Car victory of the season and fourth of her career. Force, No. 1 qualifier, finished in 4.148 seconds at 306.46 mph in a Ford Mustang. She is one of 14 female winners in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, starting with Shirley Muldowney in Top Fuel in 1976.

Rosberg holds off rival Hamilton to win Monaco GP — Nico Rosberg won the Monaco Grand Prix from pole position on Sunday to take the overall championship lead from his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished second to give Mercedes a fifth straight 1-2 finish. The German driver clinched his second victory of the season and fifth of his career, making a strong start and holding off Hamilton to repeat his maiden GP win from pole in Monaco last year. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo clinched his second straight third-place finish.
