Study: Strength of family ties

A recent survey conducted by Generations United found three out of four adults feel strongly connected to their parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, great grandparents or great-grandchildren.
The survey found people often took time out of their lives to provide their family members with:
• emotional support when it was needed (74 percent)
• help with chores and other household tasks (60 percent)
• help making financial, legal or medical decisions (48 percent)
• help with transportation services (50 percent)
• help with child care or care giving services (40 percent)
Many people also provide financial help to their family members according to the survey, which found:
• 68 percent of people give their family members money for basic needs with an average contribution of $3,800 a year.
• 41 percent give their family members money for medical bills with an average contribution of $1,100 a year.
• 32 percent give their family members money for education with an average contribution of $1,700 a year.
• 24 percent give their family members money for child care or caregiving services with an average contribution of $600 a year.
