Sept. 13, 1923 – May 21, 2014

Vernicia passed peacefully on May 21, 2014, at the age of 90, and with her family around her.

She was born Vernicia Mary Frost on Sept. 13, 1923, in Portland, OR, where she attended school and then worked for the Coast Guard during WW II. Following the war she met and married Ralph Edward Magness, a combat veteran serving in the Army in the South Pacific, and then had a distinguished career of 30 years as a Portland Police Officer.

Vernicia was an at home mom until she went to work for Alpenrose Dairy, and then to First National Bank of Oregon, working 12 years and rising to the title of loan officer before retiring.

Following retirement, Vernicia and Ralph enjoyed traveling, reading and volunteer work. They moved to Bend, in 2001, and Vernicia continued to enjoy her home and garden, along with continuing to volunteer for the High Desert Museum and the Des Chutes Historical Museum.

Vernicia and Ralph enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 55 years before his passing in 2002.

Vernicia is survived by her three children, Kathy Campbell, Scott Magness and Kevin Magness; along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She will join her husband, Ralph, in the Central Oregon mountains.
