Bend Police were called to an accident Tuesday after a semitrailer carrying cows damaged a railroad overpass in southeast Bend.

At 2:39 p.m. Tuesday, Bend Police were called to a vehicle crash on Southeast Brosterhous Road at the railroad overpass. Officers at the scene found a semitrailer had tried to drive northbound under the railroad bridge, which had a clearance of 12 feet, 10 inches. The trailer struck the bridge and damaged the trailer, which was carrying 76 cows and calves. The driver, 57-year-old William Parris Conley of Prineville, was not injured, and no other vehicles were involved.

Conley had been diverted to Brosterhous Road after another car crash blocked Knott Road.

Police worked to remove the cattle from the trailer, and an emergency veterinarian was assessing cattle injured in the crash. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad is evaluating the bridge for structural damage.
