Grab a beer, outside

The 10 Barrel Brewing Co. brewpub on Galveston Avenue in Bend in 2014.

Sometimes it seems Bendites share a common love for three things: drinking beer, being outdoors and drinking beer out-of-doors.

So in the gorgeous months of summer, when we choose to dine or drink out, it can be hard to stay inside to do so. Luckily, Bend has so many drinking spots with outdoor spaces — and their oft-associated fire pits, games, strands of twinkly lights and more — that we rarely have to.

Here at GO! Magazine’s Drinks section, we decided to put in the grueling work of researching some of the best outdoor spaces at local brewpubs. Here are a few of our favorites:

East-side style

Worthy Brewing Co.

495 N.E. Bellevue Drive

Highlights: Happy hour, live music, family and pet friendly.

For the west-siders out there who have a hard time getting out of the Galveston/Newport bubble, a short jaunt across town to Worthy is well worth your time. (Worth … Worthy, get it?) Located east of 27th Street, Worthy boasts an impressive family-friendly patio. With beautiful views of the Cascades and Pilot Butte, this west-facing space soaks up the sun, which is where two huge sun shades come in handy. A fence surrounds the whole space, making it a safe place to bring kids.

Featuring lawns on either side of the patio, Worthy’s outdoor area is so dog-friendly that waste baggies and trash cans are provided for your furry friends, who must stay on-leash. Picnic tables surround the gas fireplace, but do require seating by the host.

The game spot

GoodLife Brewing

70 S.W. Century Drive

Highlights: Large capacity, outdoor bar, locals night, the occasional food cart.

When GoodLife decided to turn the gravel lot adjacent to its brewery into an outdoor space, folks in the nearby west-side neighborhoods rejoiced. Tucked away in a building complex on Century Drive, GoodLife’s spacious, fenced lawn features two crushed granite bocce ball courts, cornhole setups and ladderball; it’s the place to go if you’re craving some friendly competition.

This first come, first served outdoor space also contains seven tables, 20 chairs and a gas fireplace.

The neighborhood hangout

10 Barrel Brewing

1135 N.W. Galveston Ave.

Highlights: 21-and-over area, wood fireplace, live music.

10 Barrel, located in the heart of Bend’s west side, has a reputation as a place to “see and be seen.” It’s always busy, always crammed full of people, and you’re always guaranteed to rub elbows with someone new. Yes, actually rub elbows. Recently 10 Barrel added standing tables to its planting boxes, as well as patio tables and lounge chairs, in an effort to make its outdoor space more usable and comfortable.

While the patio is family friendly, the area with the outdoor bar that faces Galveston Avenue is for folks 21 and older only, giving this space a little something for everyone.

The old standby

O’Kane’s at McMenamins Old St. Francis School

700 N.W. Bond St.

Highlights: Happy hour, multiple fire pits, family friendly, cigar friendly.

O’Kane’s claim to fame may be its cigar-friendly indoor space, but its outdoor area deserves just as much attention. Featuring a bunch of tables and fire pits — with a stack of firewood always standing nearby, ready to keep the flames roaring and the Central Oregon’s chilly nighttime air at bay — this place accommodates large crowds and is ideal for a lazy afternoon spent reading a book or an evening of standing around the fire with friends.

Room to roam

Crux Fermentation Project

50 S.W. Division St.

Highlights: Huge lawn, games, live music, family and pet friendly, sundown specials.

It’s celebrating its second birthday next week, so Crux Fermentation Project isn’t exactly new. But its giant lawn, located next to the brewery and down a steep hill from the Bend Parkway, features tons of space for cornhole and disc golf, with room to spare for little ones to run around. An adjacent cement patio with a custom fire pit made out of an empty 1949 propane tank provides a great place to watch the sun set over a killer view of the Cascade mountains.
