Embiid has stress fracture in foot — Kansas center Joel Embiid, one of the top prospects in the upcoming NBA draft, has a stress fracture in his right foot and is scheduled to have surgery on Friday. Embiid’s agent, Arn Tellem, made the announcement on Thursday, a week before the draft. Tellem says Embiid fractured the navicular bone in his right foot and will be unable to participate in any additional workouts. He also will not attend the draft in New York. Embiid was widely considered to be the favorite for the No. 1 overall draft pick held by the Cleveland Cavaliers. But Embiid missed a chunk of last season with a back injury as well and that combined with the foot injury could cause him to slide some on draft night.

NCAA president takes stand in O’Bannon trial — NCAA President Mark Emmert took the witness stand and is defending his organization’s role in college sports. He calls such a role vital for both students and the colleges themselves. Emmert says sports unites campuses and helps schools recruit faculty and students. He says the athletes learn life lessons from competing at all levels and he couldn’t imagine universities without sports. His testimony Thursday in Oakland, Calif., came in a much-anticipated appearance as the NCAA tries to convince a federal judge that its system of so-called amateurism is not anti-competitive and is the best model for regulating college sports. Plaintiffs led by former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon are seeking an injunction that would allow players to band together and sell the rights to their names and likenesses in broadcasts.

MLB to honor Gehrig on anniversary of speech — Major League Baseball is preparing to honor Lou Gehrig on the 75th anniversary of his famed “luckiest man” speech. MLB will donate $300,000 to organizations that fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease. The Hall of Famer was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis when he spoke at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. The first baseman died two years later from ALS at age 37. MLB players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear a commemorative patch on July Fourth. The tribute will include a video shown at all ballparks featuring a first baseman from each team reciting a line from Gehrig’s speech. MLB made the announcement on Thursday, the 111th anniversary of Gehrig’s birth.
