Metal festival is Saturday

The use of increasingly illegible logos by extreme metal bands is the best thing ever.
If you know that world, you know that bands go to great lengths to design (or have designed) logos that look, essentially, like gnarled, twisted, maybe drippy tree branches or bones or what have you, with the band’s name hidden (to varying degrees) somewhere within. Sometimes there’s a decorative element like a pitchfork or a pentagram or an ax here or there, but mostly it’s just about taking the name and making it scary and inscrutable. Bonus points for symmetry.
Anyway, Saturday brings about the second annual Central Oregon Metal Fest, and just for fun, I decided to see if I could decipher the 15-band lineup using only the logos on the poster. I got 13 of 15 right! I thought that was pretty good. I missed Abiosis and Death Agenda. Shout out to Death Agenda, by the way; you know they have a crazy logo considering I wrote about their new album a month ago and I still couldn’t figure out what it said.
Anyway, here’s that lineup: Succor, Necryptic, Season of Suffering, World of Lies, Existential Depression, Spawn, Death Agenda, Damage Overdose, Cruciation, Abiosis, Godenied, Thorns of Creation, Boudica, Neuroethic and Rutabaga. Expect a day full of death, black, crust, punk, thrash, grind, classic metal and more. Search the event on Facebook to find a more precise schedule.
Central Oregon Metal Fest; 1 p.m. Saturday; $2; Third Street Pub, 314 S.E. Third St., Bend; 541-306-3017.
