Hawes set to join Clippers — The Los Angeles Clippers and free-agent center Spencer Hawes on Friday agreed to a four-year, $23 million deal, NBA executives confirmed. The executives spoke to the Los Angeles Times on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Hawes, who played for the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers last season and made $6.5 million, will receive the Clippers’ full midlevel exception, which starts at $5.305 million per year. There have been reports that Clippers Coach and President Doc Rivers had been trying to work a sign-and-trade deal with Cleveland for Hawes so he could use the midlevel exception to try to get free-agent small forward Paul Pierce.
Lakers NBA’s most profitable team — Despite a miserable campaign, the Los Angeles Lakers were the most profitable franchise in the NBA-by a large margin. According to a memo distributed to teams by the NBA, the Lakers project to earn a $158.3 million profit for the 2013-14 season, before tax and revenue sharing. The Chicago Bulls, second on the list, earned less than half that amount, at $75.7 million. The Los Angeles Clippers were seventh at $30.4 million. The Brooklyn Nets were the least profitable with a loss of $51.5 million, before tax and revenue sharing. The Memphis Grizzlies will receive a league-high $23.1 million in revenue sharing, followed by the Charlotte Hornets (formerly the Bobcats) at $22 million. Twenty-one teams project to finish with a positive cash flow, up from 17 before taxes and revenue sharing.

Athletics finalize blockbuster trade with Cubs — The Oakland Athletics finalized their blockbuster trade with the Chicago Cubs, strengthening their starting rotation with a bold move that cost the AL West leaders a couple of top prospects. Oakland acquired right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from Chicago for minor leaguers Addison Russell, Billy McKinney, Dan Straily and a player to be named. The deal was announced on Saturday. Samardzija and Hammel join Scott Kazmir, Sonny Gray and Tommy Milone in one of the majors’ best rotations. Samardzija has a 2.83 ERA in 17 starts this year, while Hammel is 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA. An injury sidelined Russell earlier this season, but the shortstop is batting .333 with three doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and three steals in 13 games for Double-A Midland. The 19-year-old McKinney was the A’s first-round pick last year.

Browns WR charged with DWI — Police say Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after speeding down a street in Raleigh, N.C. Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Gordon was taken into custody after being pulled over for going 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on U.S. 70 in northwest Raleigh around 3 a.m. Saturday. Gordon was released on bail. Court records did not list an attorney. The 23-year-old Pro Bowl wide receiver has been in trouble before off the field. He missed two games last season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and reportedly failed another drug test during the offseason, which could lead to a season-long ban. Browns General Manager Ray Farmer said the team is aware of the arrest and is disappointed. He didn’t comment further.
