Young Americans showing promise

WIMBLEDON, England — “It’s not pretty at the moment, but the cavalry is coming,” Patrick McEnroe said last month of the state of U.S. men’s tennis.

Though no American man reached the fourth round in singles at Wimbledon, the hoofsteps got louder last week on the soft grass.

Jack Sock, a 21-year-old Nebraskan, won the men’s doubles title with Vasek Pospisil, his first-time partner, over the top-seeded twins Bob and Mike Bryan, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, on Saturday.

In the boys’ singles draw, seven of the last 16 were Americans. Three of the four semifinalists were Americans as well, as are both finalists, Noah Rubin and Stefan Kozlov. It will be the first Wimbledon boys’ singles final between two Americans since 1977, when Van Winitsky beat Eliot Teltscher.

Rubin, 18, who is from Rockville Centre, New York, and Kozlov, 16, who was born in Macedonia, are close friends who often room together. Rubin, who said he was deciding between Wake Forest and Virginia for college, said sharing space with Kozlov was “never boring.”

Kozlov, despite being younger, turned professional years ago, saying college was never something he considered.

“I would love to go to college, but I think that pro is the right thing to do for me,” he said, adding, “Nadal and Federer, I don’t think those guys went to college.”

Taylor Harry Fritz, 16, a Californian who lost to Rubin in the semifinals, said he had not decided about college. But Fritz, whose 133 mph serve overshadows a thoughtful, articulate nature, understands why the spotlight has turned to his generation with the current drought at the professional level. He also understands how that spotlight might burn those who are not ready for it.

“I feel like how the pros for the Americans is going right now isn’t the best, and it’s making people more attentive toward our generation, because they’re looking for that next person who is going to be the future of American tennis,” he said. “But I also feel like that somewhat hinders some of our development as well, especially people who get the most attention.”

“That’s a lot of pressure,” Fritz added. “That’s what happened to Donald Young. They’re the future, the next best thing. It’s just a lot to live up to. I wouldn’t want people saying that, and me having to go out every single time I play and live up to this.”
