Local tourney goes off despite weather — Central Oregon’s unpredictable summer weather could not keep the Bend Premier Cup soccer tournament from what organizers said was another successful year. The three-day event, in its fifth year, took place last Friday through Sunday at six locations around Bend. Some harsh weather conditions, including hail and lightning, forced some delays and schedule changes, but otherwise the tournament went off as planned. Some 180 teams from Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Idaho and Alaska — up from 156 teams in 2013 — took part in boys and girls divisions ranging in age from U9 to U19. Tara Erickson, technical director for the Bend FC Timbers program, noted that the host teams enjoyed considerable success in the tournament, claiming boys championships in the U17-19 and U11 Gold divisions, and winning girls titles in the U17-19 Gold (White group), U13 Gold and U16 divisions. Another Bend FC Timbers squad reached the final of the boys U12 Silver division, and a Redmond club, Team USA Redmond, advanced to the final in the boys U11 Silver division. Erickson said her goals for next year’s Premier Cup are “to evaluate on this year and improve the areas we could work on but continue to grow the tournament.”

Jones, Cormier regret brawl at promo — Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier both deeply regret their brawl at a publicity stop in Las Vegas earlier this week. The light heavyweights also say they would probably do it again in a similar situation. Jones and Cormier kept their rivalry civil Tuesday during another publicity appearance for their title fight next month. They sat on opposite sides of a stage at a club in downtown Los Angeles, with police officers watching them warily. They’ll likely face disciplinary action from the UFC and the Nevada Athletic Commission for a scuffle that started during a photo faceoff in the lobby of the MGM Grand casino.

Carroll: Starters to play some in Denver— Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll wouldn’t give specifics but he said his starters would play some in tonight’s preseason opener against Denver. Carroll specifically said rookie linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (oblique) will not play. Guard James Carpenter (calf) and backup QB B.J. Daniels (groin) will both dress but it’s unknown if they’ll play. Second-round pick Paul Richardson (shoulder) should be available to play. Carroll also said injured WR Kevin Norwood had a bone spur removed from his foot.

Stricker selected as assistant captain for Ryder Cup — Steve Stricker will be one of Tom Watson’s assistants at the Ryder Cup. Watson made the announcement Wednesday on the eve of the PGA Championship. Stricker will be one of three U.S. assistant captains working under Watson, who had previously announced Andy North and Raymond Floyd. Stricker has been a stalwart in team competitions, playing three times in the Ryder Cup and five times at the Presidents Cup. He quickly accepted Watson’s offer as the U.S. tries to reclaim the Ryder Cup from Europe Sept. 26-28 at Gleneagles in Scotland.

Sharks, Kings to play game at 49ers’ new stadium — The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings are going to take their rivalry outdoors next season. The NHL announced Wednesday that the Pacific Division foes will meet at the San Francisco 49ers’ new home on Feb. 21. The $1.2 billion Levi’s Stadium seats about 68,500 for football, and the weather in Santa Clara is typically warmer and drier than in the more scenic San Francisco, which is about 45 miles north.
