Eugene death — Eugene police say a 23-year-old man who died Wednesday after being found unconscious in a downtown alley had been in a fight earlier that morning. Spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said Friday that investigators determined that Dean Eric Sweeden was in an altercation between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. near the 7-Eleven at Seventh Avenue and Jefferson Street. The injured man was found about six hours later. He was taken to a Springfield hospital, where he later died. Eugene police want to hear from anyone who saw the fight or has information about the case.

Gun ban — A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge has ruled that residents who challenged the county’s gun control ordinance have no legal grounds to sue. Judge Kathleen Dailey said Thursday the five plaintiffs were in no danger of arrest. The Oregonian reports the ruling is a victory for the county but leaves the constitutionality of the ordinance up for debate. The ordinance approved in April of last year makes it illegal to possess a loaded gun in public in the county, with a few exceptions for hunters, law enforcement and people with a permit to carry a concealed handgun.

Gay marriage legal fees — A federal judge has approved more than $133,000 in legal fees to one group of lawyers in Oregon’s gay marriage case. The money goes to three Portland lawyers who filed the first lawsuit challenging Oregon’s ban on same-sex marriage. The Oregonian reports the state also will pay the legal fees for a second group of lawyers who worked with the American Civil Liberties Union, but the amount has not been announced. The cases led to the May 19 ruling by U.S. District Judge Michael McShane allowing same-sex couples to marry in Oregon.
