Cause brings runners by the hundreds

SUNRIVER — Runners from near and far were among the winners of Saturday’s races on the first day of the fourth annual Sunriver Marathon for a Cause.

Nearly 600 runners and walkers took part in races Saturday at Sunriver Resort in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention.

In the day’s featured race, the half marathon, Joshua Cross, 35, from Flagstaff, Arizona, was the overall winner in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 49 seconds. The women’s overall winner was Stephanie Henstrom, 38, of Portland, in 1:25:36. Masters winners were Chuck Coats, 55, of Prineville, in 1:22:15, and Jennefer Lloyd, 48, of Bend, in 1:32:16.

In the 10K race, Bend’s Jared Bassett, 24, was the overall winner in 32:04; Jay Whitney, 21 and also of Bend, was first among the women in 44:44. Masters division winners were Sean Flynn, 45, of Bend, in 43:50, and Julie Downing, 47, of Bend, in 48:00.

In the 5K race, Ashland’s Justin Loftus, 42, was both the overall winner and the men’s masters winner in 18 minutes flat. The women’s overall winner was Bend’s Amy Neff, 36, in 21:03. The women’s masters winner was Bend’s Stephanie Waritz, 45, in 21:16.

Proceeds benefit the Oregon and southwest Washington affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
