Mental health advocates host suicide prevention events

The Deschutes County Suicide Prevention Advisory Council and its community partners are hosting a number of activities in September to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Sept. 8-14 is National Suicide Awareness Week.
Suicide is the leading cause of death in Oregon; 33 people in Deschutes County died by suicide in 2012. Advocates say recognition of warning signs and early intervention can save lives.
The events include the following:
• Saturday, 10 a.m. — Road to Recovery, a 5K Walk to benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness at Crow’s Feet Commons, 875 NW Brooks St., Bend. Register at www.namicentraloregon.org.
• Monday, Sept. 8, 6:30 to 8 p.m. — “Real Stories, Stories of Hope and Survivorship” at Tin Pan Theater, 869 NW Tin Pan Alley, Bend. Free. Recommended for persons 18 years of age and older.
• Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Suicide prevention training and panel of experts at the Bend Fire Department, 63377 NE Jamison St., Bend. Free. Recommended for persons 18 years of age and older.
• Saturday, Sept. 13, 9 to 10:30 a.m. — Out of the Darkness Walk. Benefit for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Pilot Butte State Park, Bend. To register, email faybag@msn.com or call 541-419-5303.
• Tuesday, Sept. 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Suicide prevention training at BestCare Prevention Office, 242 SW 4th St., Suite F., Madras. Free. Recommended for persons 18 years of age and older.
• Saturday, Oct. 11, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. — Youth mental health first aid training at Community Presbyterian Church, 529 NW 19th St., Redmond. To register, email whitefam@bendcable.com. Recommended for people who work with youth.
• Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) at Deschutes County Services Building, 1300 NW Wall St., Bend. Register at www.deschutes.org/suicideprevention. Recommended for teachers, counselors, law enforcement officials or others who work in positions of authority.
