‘The League’ keeps momentum

San Francisco — With a few exceptions, such as “Breaking Bad,” shows that have been around for five seasons or more rarely get much ink, of the literal or digital variety, even if they are somehow as great today as they were from the start.

“Parenthood” is a good example, and so is “The League,” which launches its sixth sick and twisted season Wednesday on FXX.

The series was created by Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcus and lived for four years on FX before shifting to that channel’s edgier offspring.

If anyone tells you the show is about a group of friends who compete obsessively in a fantasy football league, you’re only hearing a small part of why “The League” is in a comedy league of its own.

Yes, the five guys and one woman do get ruthless about competing in fantasy football, but the comedy comes from equal opportunity humiliation that is the basis of their friendships.

The humor is tasteless and irresistible, an unlikely mix of juvenile jokes about sex and bodily functions, with time-honored elements of screwball comedy. Wednesday’s premiere quickly becomes as untethered as a classic Peter Sellers movie, and just as funny.

Of course, no episode of “The League” would be complete without some cameos by NFL players. In the premiere episode, which aired last Wednesday, Cameron Jordan of the New Orleans Saints and Jordan Cameron of the Browns made appearances.

Or is it the other way around? It isn’t, but the point is that you don’t really have to know NFL players or what an IDP ranking is to love — and laugh uncontrollably at — “The League.”
