The Sisters Ranger District plans to close a cinder pit near Sisters to shooting until early December.

The Zimmerman Cinder Pit, 3½ miles west of Sisters, will be closed to shooting from Sunday to Dec. 1 to allow contractors to clear trees from near the pit, according to the Deschutes National Forest. The tree clearing will ready the pit for cinder mining by the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Elsewhere in the district, the Garrison, Schilling and McKenzie pits will remain open for shooting. For more information on the pits, people can stop by the Sisters Ranger District office, at the junction of Pine Street and U.S. Highway 20 in Sisters, or call 541- 549-7700.
