“Dolphin Tale 2”

Rating: PG for some mild thematic elements.

What it’s about: Winter, the disabled dolphin, faces new crises, and the kids who care for her face big life decisions about what they’ll be when they grow up.

The kid-attractor factor: Kids and critters, living and working in the Clearwater Aquarium.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Injured wild animals should be returned to the wild, whenever possible. “Rescue. Rehab. Release.”

Violence: An animal dies.

Language: Disney clean.

Sex: See above.

Drugs: None.

Parents’ advisory: More somber, with its emphasis on loss and the sick or injured people Winter inspires, it is but suitable for all ages.

“The Skeleton Twins”

Rating: R for language, some sexuality and drug use.

What it’s about: Suicidal siblings are the last to realize they’re each other’s best hope for somebody to lean on when things become difficult.

The kid-attractor factor: Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, “Saturday Night Live” comics who explore depression with warmth and humor.

Good lessons/bad lessons: A sibling can be the most reliable constant in your life, and the person most likely to know how to hit you where it hurts.

Violence: Attempted suicide.

Language: Some profanity.

Sex: Yes, played for laughs, with discussion of an inappropriate and scandalous sexual relationship from the past.

Drugs: Yes.

Parents’ advisory: Entirely too adult for preteens, but the treatment of its themes, actions and their consequences make this OK for 15-and-up.
