Hunter McDonald ran for 188 yards and Bend High’s defense proved stingy in a 21-0 home win Friday night over Klamath Union.
Keyed by McDonald, who also scored a touchdown that gave Bend a 14-0 lead with 25 seconds left in the third quarter, the Lava Bears compiled 263 of its 400 yards of total offense on the ground.
That helped the Lava Bears (1-1) control the ball.
“I thought we ran the ball really well and threw it efficiently,” said Bend coach Matt Craven. “They blitzed a lot, but we were able to pick most of them up and create creases. Then we ran the ball pretty well.”
Bend got on the board early when quarterback Creighton Simmonds, who completed 13 of 16 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns, hit Chris Wallace on a 12-yard scoring pass with 7:07 left in the first quarter.
Bend limited the Pelicans to 221 yards of offense and also forced three turnovers, including interceptions by Elliot Willy and Quinn Fettig.
Austin Adye’s fourth-quarter fumble recovery deep in Bend territory stunted Klamath Union’s comeback attempt. Then the Lava Bears put Klamath Union away with a 12-play, 86-yard fourth-quarter drive that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Simmonds to Evan Chapman.
“It’s really fun as a coach, fun to watch the kids control the ball for that many plays in a row,” Craven said, “especially so early in the year.”
