MLB announces length of games committee — Incoming baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred and players’ association head Tony Clark have been selected to participate in a new Major League Baseball committee tasked with decreasing the times of games. The committee will be chaired by Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholz. The group includes Boston Red Sox Chairman Tim Werner and partner Michael Gordon, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and MLB Executive Vice President Joe Torre. The average time of a nine-inning game has increased from 2 hours, 33 minutes in 1981 to a record 3:03 this year. Selig says the group plans to make recommendations for the 2015 season.

Injured former USC player sues school, Kiffin — Former Southern California cornerback Brian Baucham is suing the school and former coach Lane Kiffin, alleging he was forced to play in a game while ill. Baucham claims he suffered cardiopulmonary damage and brain injury when he played against California on Sept. 22, 2012, two months after sustaining a concussion. Baucham’s lawsuit claims he was ill before the game, but was forced to play by Kiffin. Baucham collapsed on the field during the second half and was taken to a hospital by ambulance, spending several days on a ventilator. Baucham didn’t play for the Trojans again. The lawsuit also claims USC attempted to revoke Baucham’s scholarship after his injury.
