SPRINGFIELD — Mountain View went shot-for-shot on Friday night, answering the bell each time Springfield rang.

But a key interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, as well as 324 passing yards and five touchdowns through the air by Trever Watson, sparked the Millers, who rallied past the visiting Cougars 40-34 in nonleague football action.

Mountain View’s Mike Irwin completed 9 of 13 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns in the first half before exiting with an injury, helping the Cougars build a 21-18 halftime lead. Neither side led by more than eight points until the fourth quarter. In that period, Omari Thomas picked off a Mountain View pass and returned it 37 yards for the score, and a 65-yard touchdown pass from Trever Watson to Braydon Haas allowed Springfield to grab a 40-27 advantage midway through the fourth.

Caleb Tatum connected with Chris Adamo for a 7-yard touchdown with less than three minutes to play, but the Cougars, No. 1 in the OSAA’s Class 5A rankings heading into the night, suffered their first setback of the season.

Cody Anthony had 21 carries for 104 yards for Mountain View (3-1) and was on the receiving end of a 10-yard touchdown pass from Irwin. Adamo had six catches for 73 yards and a score, Dantly Wilcox hauled in two passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Austin Albin finished with five catches, 53 yards and a score.

Mountain View begins Intermountain Conference play at Summit next Friday.
