Deaths of note from around the world:
Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock, 88: First female pilot to fly solo around the world. Died Tuesday at her home in Quincy, Florida, after being in failing health for months.
Shlomo Lahat, 87: Former Tel Aviv mayor who presided over the city’s transformation into a vibrant and open urban center. Died on Wednesday in a Tel Aviv hospital. Israeli media said Lahat had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Richard F. Thompson, 84: University of Southern California neuroscientist whose experiments with rabbits led to breakthrough discoveries on how memories are physically stored in the brain. Died Sept. 16 at his home in Nipomo, California, from congestive heart failure.
