While the Mad Caddies have sustained their band in part by expanding their sound, their Southern California brethren in Guttermouth are proudly, staunchly “still punk.”
Go ahead and Google their name. The first result, at least on my screen, is the band’s official website, which comes up with the tagline: “10 Albums later … we’re still punk.”
See? Still punk. Stiiiiilllll puuuuuuunk! (Yell that as loud as you can while punching your fist into the sky.)
Anyway, Guttermouth may have 10 albums to its name, but there have been none since 2006, when the band released “Shave the Planet.” But then again, Guttermouth has always been known for its bad-boy antics as much or more than its songs. This is a band that has been banned from performing in Canada after singer Mark Adkins was charged with indecent exposure. It’s a band that left the Warped Tour after spending most of the summer making fun of the other bands on the bill. It’s a band known for its shocking lyrics more than its punk poetry.
Oh yeah, the music: classic ‘80s-rooted Orange County punk rock, fast and furious and catchy and snotty. Tonight in Bend, make sure to show up on time so you don’t miss another veteran SoCal punk group, the surf/ski-influenced Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Guttermouth, with Voodoo Glow Skulls, Against the Grain and Black Pussy; 8 tonight, doors open 7 p.m.; $15, plus fees in advance, available at www.ticketswest.com, www.bendticket.com and Ranch Records (541-389-6116) in Bend; www.actiondeniroproductions.com.
