AMSTERDAM — Bend’s Chris van der Velde slid 17 spots and into a tie for 20th place Saturday in the second round of the Dutch Senior Open.
The 50-year-old van der Velde shot a 5-over-par 78 Saturday at The International to fall to 2 over for the 54-hole tournament. A day after climbing into third place, van der Velde now finds himself sharing 20th place with nine other players headed into the final round.
Van der Velde, a dual Holland-U.S. national, did card two birdies in his second round. But a double bogey on the par-4 16th hole and five bogeys did his round in.
Englishman Philip Golding leads the 64-player tournament at 7 under, a stroke better than a tie for second place that includes former British Open champion Ian Woosnam.
A former European Tour player, van der Velde is making his debut on the European Senior Tour, Europe’s equivalent to the Champions Tour.
