SILVER LAKE — North Lake topped Class 1A Special District 2 football rival Gilchrist 32-24 on Friday afternoon, handing the Grizzlies their third consecutive defeat. Gilchrist (0-3 league, 2-3 overall) trailed 14-8 at halftime before the Cowboys (1-2, 2-3) outscored the Grizzlies 18-16 in the second half to hang on for the win.
“Our youth got exposed,” Gilchrist coach Steve Gillaspie said. “We’re very young. Pretty much everybody on our team is a first-year football player. … It’s young men playing against young kids right now.”
Jonny Heitzman, Gilchrist’s lone senior, scored two rushing touchdowns, and Jacob Blood had another score for the Grizzlies.
Gilchrist is back home next Friday against Triad.
