Quick second-half scores lift Storm

REDMOND — After the first 24 minutes of the game, Summit had a one-point lead.
After the first 40 seconds of the second half, the Storm had the game pretty well in hand.
Summit stunned Redmond with two fast touchdowns to open the third quarter, then traded scores with the Panthers the rest of the way en route to a 42-22 Intermountain Conference football victory Friday night at Redmond High.
Following a 9-yard touchdown pass from John Bledsoe to Cameron McCormick just 32 seconds into the second half, the Panthers fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and Patrick Leiphart recovered and returned the free ball 28 yards for another score and a 21-6.
“That’s the big thing with our team,” said Summit coach Joe Padilla, “We have a lot of good athletes who can make things happen like that for us.”
Summit improved to 1-1 in IMC play and 3-2 overall. Redmond, which opened the season with four straight nonconference wins, lost its second in a row in league play and is now 0-2 in the IMC, 4-2 overall.
The night started well for the Panthers, as quarterback Bunker Parrish ran 5 yards for the game’s first touchdown and a 6-0 lead for the home team just 3 1/2 minutes into the first quarter.
Summit countered later in the period with Jason Garcia’s 2-yard touchdown run, and Daly’s kick put the Storm up 7-6. That’s where it stood after a scoreless second quarter — until Summit broke it open early in the second half.
The Storm stretched their lead to 28-6 on Bledsoe’s second 9-yard TD pitch to McCormick. But Redmond came back with a Parrish-to-Alex Hughes touchdown connection for 45 yards and a touchdown to make it 28-14 late in the third period.
Bledsoe made it a three-possession game again early in the fourth quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run. Parrish answered with a 1-yard rushing score two minutes later to get the Panthers within 35-22. But the Storm put it away with a lengthy, time-consuming drive capped by Bledsoe’s third touchdown pass of the night, a short toss to Kyle Cornett who streaked up the right sideline for 22 yards and the game’s final score.
“We wanted to keep it simple tonight,” said Padilla. “We wanted to get back to basics running the football, and throw higher-percentage passes.”
Garcia led Summit’s ground attack with 112 yards on 24 carries. Bledsoe completed 14 of 22 passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns.
For the Panthers, Brown carried 13 times for 175 yards, and Parrish completed eight passes for 112 yards.
Both teams have conference games again next Friday. The Storm play at home against Ridgeview, while the Panthers travel to Bend to face Mountain View.
