La Pine facing DEQ fines for late reports

The city of La Pine is facing a $1,125 fine from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for not submitting wastewater treatment reports on time for the past three years.
The state agency says the city has sent 17 late reports for its treatment facility on Reed Road.
DEQ said it is issuing the penalty because the reports are an important part of monitoring the effectiveness of the city’s wastewater treatment and making sure the recycled water is safe.
“We use the data to determine whether their system is functioning right,” said Greg Svelund, a spokesman for DEQ. He added that the department makes suggestions or recommendations based on the reports and considers whether the treatment is meeting proper standards.
The wastewater is treated organically with filters in aerated lagoons. The recycled water can be used on crops that feed cattle and other livestock. DEQ issued a pollution control permit for the lagoons in 2011. The permit requires the city to send an updated report once a month.
City officials have until Oct. 22 to appeal the fine. A request for comment from the city Public Works Department was not returned.
