Governor defends fiancee’s business — Democratic Gov. John Kitzhaber and Republican state Rep. Dennis Richardson were both on the defensive Tuesday night, Kitzhaber for his fiancee’s business and Richardson for his views on social issues as the candidates for Oregon governor met in their fifth debate. Revelations about Kitzhaber’s fiancee, Cylvia Hayes, have overshadowed the campaign for nearly a week. Under scrutiny from reporters, Hayes has acknowledged that she was involved in plans to grow marijuana and that she accepted money for a fraudulent marriage in the 1990s. But in Tuesday’s debate, Richardson tried to keep the focus on the intersection between Hayes’ consulting business and her role as first lady, suggesting at one point that Hayes was “on the take,” drawing gasps from some in the audience. “We shouldn’t be focusing on what happened 17 years ago, because that’s between Cylvia Hayes and law enforcement,” Richardson said. “But it’s a character issue, and it plays into what’s happening presently.”
Records breach — The troubled Oregon Employment Department said hackers breached a database and could have seen Social Security numbers, addresses and birth dates for more than 851,000 job seekers. The agency has said there’s no evidence that anyone’s identity has been stolen, but those who have used the department’s website are urged to change their password, The Oregonian reports.
Possible murder-suicide — The Malheur County Sheriff’s Office said two people were found dead Tuesday afternoon in the Eastern Oregon community of Ontario. KTVB-TV reports that Undersheriff Travis Johnson said that officers are investigating the case as a possible murder-suicide. The bodies were found near Chester Road and Foothill Drive. Additional details were not available.
Firefighters rescue woman — Firefighters in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie have rescued a woman from a house fire. Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman Brandon Paxton said the woman was taken to a hospital late Tuesday afternoon in serious condition. He told KATU-TV that rescuers had difficulty reaching the person in a back bedroom because of “excessive clutter” inside the home.
