A deer hunter reported finding human remains on the east side of Steens Mountain earlier this month.

The Harney County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Oct. 7 report and found the remains, according to the sheriff’s office. The office has since sent them to the Oregon state medical examiner to identify.

Likely the most recent person to go missing in the area is Dustin Self, a 19-year-old Oklahoma man who disappeared in spring 2013, and his truck was found on the east side of the 9,733-foot fault-block mountain. No trace of him had been found since.
