White Buffaloes sweep finale — Behind Shelby Mauritson’s 16 kills and Elle Renault’s 21 assists, Madras powered past visiting Gladstone 25-5, 25-9, 25-12 in its Tri-Valley Conference finale on Wednesday night in Madras. The win improved the White Buffaloes to 9-1 in league play as they await today’s result between Crook County and visiting Estacada. Should the Cowgirls win to also move to 9-1 in TVC action, Madras would expect to play Crook County at Ridgeview in Redmond on Tuesday to determine the league champion. Against Gladstone, Alexis Urbach finished with 10 digs and three aces, Taylor Sjolund totaled six kills and a .750 hitting percentage, and the Buffs served at a 95 percent clip as a team.

U.S. beats Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 — Abby Wambach scored in the 54th minute to help the United States beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Kansas, in their opening Women’s World Cup qualifying game. Wambach scored on a header off Alex Morgan’s cross for her record-extending 171st international goal. Hope Solo made one save to push her U.S. record for shutouts to 74.

2nd female jockey dies in Australia from race fall — Apprentice jockey Caitlin Forrest died on Wednesday after a fall at Murray Bridge race course near Adelaide, the second female jockey to die this week in Australia. Forrest’s mount Colla Voce fell, bringing down three other horses, and she was flung to the ground ahead of the trailing pack. Forrest, 19, was airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital but died from her injuries. Carly-Mae Pye, 26, died on Tuesday from injuries sustained when the horse she was riding broke its front legs during a training run, throwing her head-first into the track.

Lakers’ Steve Nash injures back carrying bags — Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash has missed his third straight practice after injuring his back while carrying bags. Coach Byron Scott said Nash had “a little bit of a setback” earlier Wednesday while carrying bags. Scott says Nash “heard a twinge” in his back, and the coach suspected it was a back spasm. The Lakers don’t know how long the two-time NBA MVP will be out of action.

Cowboys’ Randle will play after shoplifting arrest — Dallas running back Joseph Randle says he made the “biggest mistake of my life” when he was arrested on a shoplifting charge that led to a fine from the Cowboys, but no suspension. Randle was charged with a Class B misdemeanor of theft between $50 and $500 after he was accused of taking $123 worth of cologne and underwear from a department store at a suburban Dallas mall on Monday. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Randle would be fined “significantly” but would play Sunday against the New York Giants.

Seahawks’ Wagner out for couple of weeks — The Seattle Seahawks will be without middle linebacker Bobby Wagner for at least a couple of weeks after a turf toe injury suffered last Sunday against Dallas. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Wagner, starting center Max Unger (foot) and starting tight end Zach Miller (ankle surgery) would miss this Sunday’s game at St. Louis.
