Pit bull euthanized — The pit bull that killed another dog on a Portland streetcar last month has been put to death. A Multnomah County spokeswoman told The Oregonian newspaper the dog was euthanized by animal shelter staff because it was deemed a threat to the community. The Sept. 24 attack happened when a homeless girl led the dog onto a streetcar in the Pearl District. According to witnesses, the pit bull quickly went after a black Pomeranian that was already on the streetcar. The Pomeranian suffered serious injuries and died. The pit bull was taken into custody and kept at the Multnomah County Animal Shelter.
Boy killed by train — The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said a 13-year-old boy who had been walking on railroad tracks south of Gervais was struck and killed by a train. Sgt. Don Parise said sheriff’s officers responded to the crash scene Tuesday night. The boy was not identified pending notification of relatives. Additional details were not available.
Police arrest stabbing suspects — Police have arrested two homeless men in last week’s fatal stabbing of a man in downtown Portland. Sgt. Pete Simpson said 18-year-old Wesley Curtis has been booked into Multnomah County Jail on a murder charge and 23-year-old Adam Elder faces charges of assault, conspiracy to commit assault and failure to register as a sex offender. The victim, 43-year-old Marc Sundin, wandered bleeding through a downtown park before dying on a sidewalk near City Hall shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday. The cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.
Body found next to railroad tracks — Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man found along the railroad tracks on Portland’s lower east side. The Portland Police Bureau said the cause and manner of death have not been determined. Railroad traffic was delayed Tuesday morning.
Car collides with log truck — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said a Sutherlin couple died when a Toyota Corolla collided with a log truck. The crash happened Monday afternoon on Nonpareil Road in Sutherlin. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Corolla driven by 50-year-old Todd Gilman veered into the oncoming lane and struck the fully loaded log truck. Gilman and his wife, Tina Gilman, died at the scene. The truck driver was taken to a Roseburg hospital. The Sheriff’s Office said both vehicles were going about 55 mph.
Woman dies in tractor accident — The Linn County sheriff said his deputies are investigating a tractor accident that killed a 47-year-old Lebanon woman. Sheriff Bruce Riley said Doris Jennings was working Tuesday afternoon with a 49-year-old man in an effort to remove an oak tree on private property. She had a chain attached to the tree and to the back of the tractor. The witness told deputies that when the rear tractor tires started to spin, Jennings applied more throttle to the engine. That caused the front of the tractor to lift and flip over on top of her. She suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Death ruled a homicide — Police in the southeast Portland suburb of Milwaukie said a 43-year-old man who died late Monday night was a homicide victim. Officer Ulli Neitch identified the man Tuesday as Kenneth Scham, who had been staying recently with friends in an apartment complex on Bluebird Street in Milwaukie. The Oregonian reports that police have a suspect in custody. Police said the homicide was not a stranger-to-stranger crime.
